A Sentry Fallen

It always stood on guard
A sentry on the farm.
In all it’s majesty
It held its own sweet charm.

Providing shade in the heat,
Cotton floating in the breeze,
A home for many critters,
This was the tree of all the trees.

A century it saw
Seasons come and seasons go
Generations passed by its trunk
All in life’s ebb and flow.

And as I recognized its splendor
Not knowing it would soon be gone.
It faced its final storm last night
Smoldering slowly into the dawn.

For it’s more than just a tree
It saw our lives unfold.
Tucking away the memories
Of the young and the old.
