Growing up in the country
First cousins, best of friends,
Always there for one another
In good times and dead ends.
Across the road and down the hill
Our bikes sure knew the way
Over the creek. Watch for cars!
We’d make plans for the day.
A mower to cut the diamond
In the pasture above the creek,
Timeout! Another pop up foul,
In the water we must seek.
Concert on the bus
We’d belt out our made-up tune,
You with “hilarious”, me on the “times”,
The whole bus would hear us croon.
So now when I think back
On who I grew up with,
You are at the top
Of my all-time best friend list.
Our meetings on the bridge
Meant we had each other’s back,
We’d share our troubles and our joy
And get our lives on track.
And as our lives continued on
We were never far apart,
Your support, the laughs and the memories
Have left their mark upon my heart.
