To Myself 25 Years Ago

If I had known then, what I know now,
I’d focus on the why and not just the how.
To see the math, understand why it’s done
Not just memorizing and understanding none.

If I had known then, what I have now learned,
Feedback is important when work is returned.
To focus on not just assigning a grade
But showing growth through the mistakes that were made.

If I had known then, what these years have taught,
Is not to worry what other teachers thought.
To find my own style, my rhythm and way
Using my passion each and every day.

If I had known then, what is often overlooked,
Is that the answer is not always in the textbook.
Create your lessons to meet the needs
Following the standards as your lead.

If I had known then, what I know today,
Make math interesting and learn to play.
Keep the focus, but interject fun,
And learning will happen before the day is done.

If I had known then, what I’ve gathered thus far,
Is never settle for something sub par.
Keep rigor up and enthusiasm too,
High expectations for your students and you.

If I had known then, what I know now,
Take care of you, extra time to allow,
Read a book or go for a walk
Take a break, call someone to talk.

What I know now, that I wish I’d known then,
Is the years will go fast so take it all in.
Give time to your students, create that tie

You’re making a difference each year that goes by.
